Crescent Roll Danishes
Do you need an easy recipe for breakfast, brunch or dessert? This is one that I have made for my kids many times over the past few years. We have tried these danishes in many different ways, cream cheese, grape, strawberry, Nutella, apple, honey, etc… We have settled on the cream cheese, strawberry and Nutella being our favorites. I usually make a double batch when I am cooking for the whole family. There are 8 crescent rolls in a package and I use 1/2 a package of cream cheese for one can.
I put the cream cheese in a bowl and heat in the microwave for 20 second intervals until it stirs up smoothly, then add 1/3 cup of sugar. Unroll the crescent rolls and separate into triangles and place 1 spoonful of cream cheese mixture on each triangle that you wish to be cream cheese flavored.
Spread the cream cheese down the triangle and roll up from the short side of the triangle to the point.
You can spread the Nutella directly on the crescent roll and roll up as shown the step above. The jelly can also be placed directly on the dough, but much of it melts off during baking. We discovered that it works better to mix the cream cheese mixture with the jelly and then place on the crescent roll.
The cream cheese thickens the jelly and keeps it in the crescent roll while changing the flavor. We tried mixing honey with the cream cheese and it worked, but the flavor change was very minimal.
Once all the crescent rolls were rolled, I placed them on a greased pan and placed it in a 350 degree oven. Cook time is usually 10-12 minutes, but watch them closely. They go quickly from not quite ready to a little overcooked very quickly. I turned the pan around at 11 minutes and took out at 13 minutes. In those 2 minutes they went from still white with just a few brown touches to a deep brown.
I had just a little of the cream cheese mixture left over, so I added my powdered sugar and milk to it to make a cream cheese icing. I like the flavor of cream cheese icing, if you do not, the icing can be made of just the powdered sugar and milk. I don’t really measure mine, I just add the powdered sugar and milk until it is the right consistency. We like ours thicker than what is usually recommended in icing recipes. The icing can be drizzled on each danish, but we usually just add it to our danishes on our plates covering them.
Crescent Roll Danishes
Ingredients
1 package of crescent rolls
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar
jelly, Nutella, nuts or other favorite flavorings
1 cup powdered sugar
2-4 tbls milk
Grease a cookie sheet and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix cream cheese and sugar, stirring until smooth. Unroll the crescent rolls, separating into triangles. Place one spoonful of cream cheese or other topping, spreading over the dough. Roll the dough up starting at the short end of the triangle to the point. Place the crescent rolls on the greased cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until the danishes are lightly browned.
Combine powdered sugar and milk to your desired consistency. If you have any of the cream cheese mixture it can be added to the icing, but will probably require extra milk to achieve the desired consistency. Drizzle the icing over the danishes or serve along with the danishes if desired.
If you try them leave a comment and let me know how it went.
