Cinnamon Toast

Cinnamon toast is one of my favorite breakfast foods. It is not very healthy, but it is delicious. I don’t fix it as often as I want to, but usually fix it about once a month. It is a great way to use up bread that is getting a little stale. I learned to make it when I was a kid and still make it the same way. I have tried a lot of different ways over the years, but still prefer it like Mom made it.

I use regular sliced white bread, real stick butter and cinnamon sugar. I bought a container of cinnamon sugar a long time ago and just refill it as necessary. I do not measure the cinnamon or sugar, just pour them in the bottle until it is light brown and has the amount of flavor that we want. We like a lot of cinnamon in our cinnamon sugar, if you don’t you will use less cinnamon.

I have tried using spread butter, margarine, and even tried a recipe by The Pioneer Woman that I found on Pinterest that mixed the butter and cinnamon sugar plus  a few other ingredients together before spreading on the bread. I did a comparison test between mine and the cinnamon spread. While it wasn’t bad, I didn’t like it as well because there were no buttery spots and the cinnamon sugar didn’t caramelize as well. The day I did the comparison test I over cooked the toast just a little but you can still see how each kind looked.

It is a lot easier to make my version as well. I don’t have to worry about mixing up the correct amount or anything. I start by laying 2 piece of bread on a paper plate,  cut the stick butter up into thin pats and place about 1/2 a pat in each corner and one in the middle. It is hard for me to cut the butter in perfect pats, so I may use a couple of little pieces together. Then I sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top of the bread and butter pieces to cover them in a light brown layer of cinnamon sugar goodness.

I transfer the finished pieces to a baking sheet and repeat until I have the correct number of pieces ready.  Make sure to sprinkle any cinnamon sugar left on the plate over the bread on the pan. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven or toaster oven until the toast is lightly browned and the cinnamon sugar is caramelized. The time will vary depending on the oven and how crisp you want your cinnamon toast. I like mine pretty crisp while my kids prefer a softer toast.

This is not really a specific recipe as far as amounts go, because the amounts needed will vary by how many pieces of cinnamon toast you need. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix granulated sugar and ground cinnamon together to taste if you do not already have some mixed up. Lay bread out on a flat plate. Place five half pats of butter on each slice of bread and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Transfer to a baking pan such as a cookie sheet. Place in preheated oven for 8-12 minutes or until the bread is toasted to the crispness that you want.
