Why Kids Should be in 4-H
Early this fall, I started a new temporary job. It is with our local Cooperative Extension Service. I am there to learn about computer programs and other office skills, but I have really enjoyed learning about all the things CES offers such as 4-H. I have heard people talk of the Extension office, but never knew what that meant. The Extension Agents provide non-formal education and learning activities to people throughout the country – farmers and other residents of rural communities as well as people living in urban areas. They do this in many ways through programs for both adults and children. One of the programs for kids is 4-H.…

Slow Cooker Chicken
Since school started back, Devin is home for supper again most nights. After he gets done with football practice, he is ready for a big filling supper. I have missed cooking big suppers. They are actually easier for me since that is what I am used to. My husband likes a variety of items at each meal which is hard to do when you are only cooking for 2 or 3. I end up with a lot of leftovers when there are only 2-3 eating. I bought some chicken legs and thighs on sale a month or so ago but I didn’t separate them out before I froze them. I…

Are Timeshares Worth It?
There are all kinds of timeshares. Some are very specific about where you stay and how long you have to stay. The older style timeshares were sold as 1 week every year or every other year at a specific resort. Every company has their own way of laying out a different system. Some of the newer companies figured out that not everyone can take a full week off every year for vacation. The company we bought into has a point system. We purchased points that can be used at a lot of different resorts however we want to use them. The minimum nights required for each resort can vary depending…

Just Toys – Not Girl or Boy Toys
When my oldest was young, a friend had a boy just 2 months younger than him. We spent a lot of time together and the boys were raised more like brothers than friends those first few years. They got into all kinds of trouble, we knew if we couldn’t hear them we better see what they were up to. One thing that always stuck with me was her calling the girl toy section at Walmart, the pink aisle. They always skipped the pink aisle. That was just the beginning of everything being pink, back then the pink aisle was mainly Barbies and baby dolls. Now almost everything has a pink…

How to Make an Omelette
I don’t make omelettes very often but we really do like them when I do. I know some people think that they are hard to make but they really aren’t. They just take some patience and of course they don’t have to be perfect to taste good. My son loves a lot of meat in his omelette, so I cut up a roll of sausage. I fried the patties first and then scrambled the ends to go in the omelette. I used ham, sausage and cheese in his omelette. I added some bacon bits to mine. That is the nice thing about omelettes, they can be made however each person…

I am Healthier Today than 10 Years Ago
Today is my 50th birthday. I am half a century old. It does not seem possible, yet it most definitely is. I can feel the years when I get out of bed or sit too long, but I don’t really feel this old. I still feel young inside, it is hard to believe that I have been out of high school for 32 years and at the end of this month I will be married for 30 years. I actually feel better most days than I did 10 years ago. I had a bad leg for about 10 years. I am not sure exactly when it started, but I do…

Ham and Cheese Hash Browns
One of our favorite breakfasts is a one skillet hash brown meal. I have been cooking this for so long that I do not remember where the idea came from. My husband used to not be too fond of this, so it became a meal I cooked for myself when he was at work. Shane liked it so he would eat it with me, but Devin never liked potatoes so I always had to make him something different. It is Shaylee’s favorite meal and John has now decided that he likes it, so we have it for a family breakfast quite often. If we are all eating it, I cook…

Macaroni with Tomato Juice
I was home today by myself, everyone else was out of town. With no one coming home for supper, I decided to make one of my favorite dishes from my childhood. Macaroni with tomato juice is a major comfort food for me. When I was a kid, my mom did a lot of canning from the garden. Tomato juice is one thing that she never had to buy, she always had it canned and ready to go. She used it in a lot of recipes like chili, vegetable soup, goulash, and macaroni with tomato juice. I know a lot of people use tomatoes, but Mom always made macaroni with tomato…
