How to Organize a Laundry Room
I told you in Laundry Done My Way that I would give you a tour of my laundry room. I didn’t mean for it to take this long, but life happens. Anyway, here it is finally. I want to show you how it is organized to make it easy for the laundry to move through our system each week with minimal effort from me. I have a large load capacity washer so that makes it easier for us to get the laundry washed in fewer loads per week.
The first part of my system begins with laundry baskets. Sounds simple right? Well it is, but it is important. I have 4 laundry baskets in my laundry room. 2 square baskets hold the lights in one and darks in the other one. These are the 2 loads that I do every week on wash day which is Monday right now. It has changed over the years to fit my schedule. The day you pick doesn’t really matter, as long as you are able to get the dirty clothes washed every week.
The third basket holds the reds, oranges and dark pinks. I don’t always wash these every week, it just depends on how many reds we wear. Right now I am washing them every week because my son is a lifeguard and he has to wear red trunks and shirts everyday he works. We probably don’t need to wash these all separately all the time, but by always keeping them separate I don’t have to worry about a new red shirt or shorts accidentally turning everything pink.
The last basket holds the white clothes which aren’t really white anymore. What we wash in this load is the towels, socks and underwear that we dry. My son is responsible for gathering this load, washing, drying and folding them. He usually washes these once a week and he and my daughter share in putting them away.
My husband gets very dirty at work, so we don’t wash his work clothes with the rest of our good clothes. He and my son work together to wash his work clothes and Devin’s sweaty football and soccer clothes a few times a week. I don’t have room for another basket in the laundry room so he just makes a pile of his work clothes in front of the baskets since he washes them so frequently.
After I wash the clothes, I hang them up to dry. I have a drying rack where I hang up pants, shorts and underwear that we don’t dry in the dryer. It is a large rack so it will hold a lot of clothes at one time.
I have 2 clothing racks that I hang the rest of the clothes up on. These racks will hold the clothes as long as I wash the clothes each week. If we get behind and play catch up, then we have clothes hanging in doorways throughout the house until they dry. None of us like that, so we try to stay as close to our weekly routine as possible to keep everything moving along.
I keep the opened bottle of detergent that we are using on the windowsill. I learned the hard way that leaving it on top of the washing machine was a mistake. The extra detergent, stain remover, boosters, bleach, etc… are in the drawers under the washer and dryer.
The cabinets over the washer and dryer are hard to reach, so I store stuff that we want to keep but don’t need very often in them. I have my collection of flags, old towels and emergency lanterns in one side. The other side holds the light bulbs, picnic clips, small tools and other stuff that I moved from the closet in the kitchen.
I have a rack in the corner that holds my iron and ironing board and another that holds the mops and brooms. These kinds of racks make use of space that would not be able to be used any other way because of the hot water heater.
Hope you enjoyed this little tour of my laundry room. It is not fancy or huge, but it is big enough to hold what we need to take care of the laundry each week. You don’t have to use the same system as I do but you can find one that works for you with just a little trial and error. If something isn’t working, try something else until you discover what works for you and your family.
